Michael Jordan on the Wheaties box, I remember, was the coolest thing. So cool, that I would eat Wheaties for months on end to save as many of the empty boxes as I could! We had garbage bags full of empty Wheaties boxes stored in our basement, not broken down, but set aside to be preserved in splendor and glory.
Those boxes were my treasure.
Jesus warned against this kind of thing, storing treasures up on earth:
Matthew 6:19-21
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
That’s so true! I was crazy about storing up all of those Wheaties boxes and now I don’t even know where they are or if we still have them! And I’m sure God doesn’t care about how many Michael Jordan Wheaties boxes we have stashed away in Mom and Dad’s basement. He cares more about fulfilling his purpose in the world.
The Takeaway
Don’t store up cereal boxes.
And remember, acting out of obedience to God is how your store up treasures in heaven. Whatever you give your time and money to is like investing in heaven.
